About Us

La Grande Rural Fire Protection District (LGRFPD), commonly known as Island City Fire Department provides fire, emergency medical services (EMS), and rescue services to our district of approximately 6,000 residents. Our district covers approximately 135 square miles (nearly 100,000 acres), ranging from large industrial complexes, such as the Kronospan Particle Board Plant and the La Grande/Union County Airport, to residential areas and farm and ranch lands. The current fire chief is Brady Walters.

Volunteer

La Grande Rural Fire District is always looking for dedicated people to join our team! Recruit academies are held each year. Stop by the fire station or contact us at info@lagranderuralfire.org.

In 2020, there are 1,056,000 firefighters in the United States. Of those, 65 percent were volunteers and 35 percent were paid, career firefighters.

There are an estimated 29,452 fire departments in the U.S. Of these, 10 percent of departments are staffed with paid, career firefighters, 64 percent are made up of all volunteers, and 26 percent are made up of volunteers and paid, career firefighters.

Burn Permits

For back yard burning, please remember to be safe and call in for your permit each day you burn. For burn permits during regulated burning season, please call 541-963-4040.
